Holiday Cottage, Eastbridge - Meadow Cottage
If you are looking for the perfect holiday cottage near Minsmere, then Meadow Cottage is in the perfect location. Built in the early 1800s, it has been sympathetically restored, and offers comfortable, stylish accommodation for four, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The views from the cottage, across the water meadows towards Minsmere, are truly stunning – and as one guest told us 'you don't really need to go anywhere; the wildlife comes to you'!
Meadow Cottage lies roughly midway between Southwold and Aldeburgh, within the Suffolk Sandlings area. Minsmere, the flagship reserve of the RSPB, is an easy walk away, while another pleasant 30 minute stroll takes you to the beautiful Suffolk coast. The cottage are ideally situated for exploring both the Suffolk coast and countryside, with a host of interesting towns, villages, beaches and other attractions within easy reach.
Meadow Cottage has been carefully restored to give you the best of both worlds; it retains lots of character, with original beams, fireplaces, sloping eaves etc, while offering up-to-date comfort, with a wet room downstairs and bathroom upstairs, and a spacious well equipped kitchen diner (with amazing views through the french doors to the large garden and beyond). There is full central heating throughout, wireless internet access, and freesat TV. Hot water, electricity, central heating and logs are all included in the rental price. Meadow Cottage sleep 4, with a good size double bedroom and a smaller twin room upstairs, plus a bathroom with bath, basin and loo. Downstairs comprises a large well-equipped kitchen with a dining table and chairs and french doors onto the patio and garden, a smaller cosy sitting room with a logburning fire, plus a large wet room with shower, loo and basin.
From the back of the cottage there are beautiful view over the garden and across the water meadows to the Minsmere river and beyond. The garden is large and completely secure, and has a patio with tables and chairs, and a shed containing barbeque, garden umbrella, logs etc. (The shed can be locked if you bring bicycles and want to keep them secure.) You can enjoy an abundance of wildlife from the garden. The barn owl box in the next door cottage has fledged several broods of barn owls so far. You can view inside the box via a live video feed and if you are lucky you might see the chicks being ringed by the Suffolk Barn Owl Trust. Marsh harriers and deer are also regularly seen, and the cottage has a bird table to encourage a wide variety of garden birds. There is parking for two cars on the front drive, which opens on to a very quiet lane in the village. The well-known Eel's Foot pub, which serves food every lunch and evening (as well as the famous Adnam's beer) is about three hundred yards away.

Barn Owls July 2022
Barn Owls 2022
Unfortunately, this year the barn owl box has been taken over by jackdaws. Barn owls have occupied the nest for 8 years with the jackdaws living in a separate compartment at the top. Breeding was successful in 7 of those 8 years. Despite a barn owl occupying the nest box this winter, the jackdaws made their move in the spring and they are now sitting on eggs. Hopefully the barn owls will make a comeback next year!

Barn Owls 2020
The Barn Owls stayed in the nest box throughout winter and produced a clutch of eggs this spring. Unfortunately, the camera got knocked out of position so we couldn't see the eggs or chicks very clearly. At the moment there are two healthy looking chicks in the box, who we hope to see fledging in the next few weeks. If we manage to get any decent photos, we'll post them on the news page and Twitter.
